“We all like a laff, don’t we! Do you ever see quirky folk trying to be ‘normal’? They’re a giggle.”

Meara lives alone. She has the anxiety dis-order, ‘Selective Mutism’. An only child, the only person with whom she has ever been able to speak to freely is her Dad, Arthur.

Mum tries to act as a mother but receives no talk, no chat from her daughter. Over the years, in the playground, at school, with neighbours, little communication evolved and therefore no friendships, no neighbourliness, little understanding with anyone. Mother and daughter are loners. Yet they both have Arthur – a dearly loved, exciting husband and a warm, loving, communicative father. But he dropped dead three weeks ago…

One Sunday evening, returning to her flat along a dark street, a strange guy steps in front of her, ’I’ve been watching you for weeks. I like you. I want to touch your breasts.’ Steve is Autistic. Can this ‘threat’ be the beginning of a story of friendship; of love?

Following a rehearsed reading in 2015 with Actors Writers London, writer Robin Marchal attempted to add substance and clarity to what was then called ‘Stunning Meara Mycroft’. In 2017 director Maurice Thorogood with actress Leonora Fyfe expressed warm interest in trying to get it together for a production. An enormous amount of skill, time and energy was put in by the three of them – pages edited, scenes swapped around and another song introduced.
