In this masterclass we’ll explore playing with form and structure in playwriting. Beginning with linear narratives and traditional structure, we will learn the basic rules of narrative before exploring the different ways that form can be disrupted. We will examine the difference between closed and open uses of time and space as well as more abstract employments of the form. I will be using my upcoming play, The Houseguest, as an example, which uses a rare closed time, open space structure.

Danny James King
Danny James King is an Olivier Award nominated writer, working across fiction, theatre, film and television. His debut play BOUNTY was runner up for the Alfred Fagon Award and a film adaptation is currently in the works with Joi Productions. His latest play, MISS MYRTLE’S GARDEN, premiered in 2025 at the Bush Theatre, directed by artistic director Taio Lawson as part of previous artistic director Lynette Linton’s final season. The Stage described the play as ‘a thing of blistering beauty’ while the Guardian wrote ‘King has a gift for writing rich comedy.’
He honed his writing through the Royal Court Young Writers Programme and was subsequently mentored by playwright Stephen Jeffreys. Prior to working in the arts, he worked in The House of Commons for a number of years as a speechwriter for various MPs.
Danny is currently developing several projects for theatre, TV, and film as well as readying the release of his debut novel.
