Mai’s afterlife is not what she expected. Her daughter, Tâm, is desperate to understand her mother fully. As dreams overlap with reality and memory slips away, the two must find their way to each other. Is it easier to say “I love you” in heaven?
love you long time (already) by Katie Đỗ is a funny and moving intergenerational epic about mothers and daughters, migration and memory, the ties that bind us and the cost of breaking free from them.
Originally workshopped and developed in the 2022 Pacific Playwrights Festival as part of The Lab at South Coast Repertory.

Over a 3 week period the plays are written, selected, cast, rehearsed and staged. By watching a preview performance between Thursday 2 – Saturday 4 July 2026, you can submit a response piece for RWR. Thursday 2 and Friday 3 July 2026 7.30pm DISCOUNTED PREVIEWS FOR WRITERS: A chance for writers to enjoy a discounted ticket and meet our Literary department and the writer of the show, Katie Đỗ. Those who attend previews are invited to take part in RWR. To unlock a £10 ticket, email boxoffice@theatre503.com to be digitally tagged as a writer. Saturday 4 July 2026 6.45pm SATURDAY SOCIAL: An opportunity for theatre creatives to come together to socialise, network and share their love for new writing. Join us from 6.45pm to meet some of the Theatre503 team and other like-minded creatives in a relaxed environment, hosted by Theatre503’s Producer, Malachy Luckie. After the show, you are invited to grab a drink from the Latchmere pub downstairs and return to the Theatre503 foyer to discuss the play with the team and hear more about ways you can get involved in our work.
Monday 6 July 2026 6.45pm DIRECTORS NIGHT: Join the Director of love you long time (already) in a pre-show conversation with Theatre503’s Artistic Director, Anthony Simpson-Pike, to hear about their journey and process as a director. After the show, you are invited to head downstairs for a drink at the Latchmere pub to chat to members of the Theatre503 team about ways to get involved in our programme as a director.
Saturday 11 July 2:30pm 2026 PAY WHAT YOU CHOOSE RELAXED PERFORMANCE: With tickets starting at £10, our pay what you choose, relaxed performance is for anyone who benefits from a more relaxed performance environment. House lights are left on during the performance, and audience members are free to exit and re-enter the theatre as required. Sound levels are reduced and any strobe / ‘flashing light’ effects are omitted. We also welcome those with babes in arms to attend this performance as it’s an opportunity for parents and/or guardians to enjoy a spot of theatre at a reduced price, without the need to hire a babysitter.
Thursday 16 July 7:30pm 2026 VIETNAMESE COMMUNITY NIGHT: Join us in the Theatre503 foyer from 7pm for our Vietnamese Community night where there will be:
– Free Vietnamese snacks from Kiju Coffee House
– A stall hosted by the An Việt Archives: An Việt Archives (AVA) is a not-for-profit community organisation stewarding the world’s largest known British-Vietnamese archive. Our work carries forward the legacy of the An Việt Foundation, founded in Hackney in 1981 to support Vietnamese refugees settling in the UK. When the Foundation closed in 2017, community volunteers and activists rescued its records from being lost, and by 2019 the collection found a permanent home at Hackney Archives — marking the beginning of AVA as it exists today.
– A post-show discussion hosted by Dam Van Huynh, Director of Centre 151 and Movement Director for love you long time (already): Centre 151 – Vietnam, Laos & Cambodia supporting the community is an independent charity based in the heart of Hackney, promoting culture, arts and community inclusion. Centre 151 – VLC is a home for the ESEA (East & South East Asian) community whilst offering a wide range of activities and amenities for the benefit of local and wider communities.
This community night will be an opportunity for the Vietnamese community to come together and celebrate this beautiful new play, and to hear more about the brilliant work that UK-based Vietnamese organisations are doing.
Katie Đỗ
Katie Đỗ is a Vietnamese American woman with a mouth from New Jersey. She’s a proud alum of the Sống Collective’s Việt Writers Lab and the Public’s Emerging Writers Group. Đỗ is also the inaugural recipient of Merrimack Repertory Theatre’s Sokhary Chau Playwriting Fellowship. Her plays have been developed by South Coast Repertory (Pacific Playwrights Festival), Atlantic Theater Company (MixFest), The Sống Collective, The Public Theater, Orlando Shakes, and Artists at Play. Her play love you long time (already) was featured on the 2023 Kilroy’s Web and who hurt you? was a 2025 Venturous Theater Fellowship finalist. She also wrote on the Netflix show Partner Track. She is a second year MFA Playwriting candidate at UCSD. kteado.com
