Theatre503’s long running flagship course for new and emerging playwrights: Introduction to Playwriting, this summer being led by celebrated playwright Sonia Jalaly.
By the end of this course, you’ll not only feel more confident in your writing — with the tools and clarity to edit your own work and keep going when things get tough. Whether you’re starting from scratch or picking up a half-finished draft, this course is here to help you finish strong.
SESSION 1 – Give Yourself Permission – Monday 1 June 7pm- 9:30pm (GMT)
Sometimes starting is the hardest bit. In this first session we’re going to work together to get over the fear, free your subconscious and get writing.
SESSION 2 – Look for Inspiration – Monday 8 June 7pm- 9:30pm (GMT)
In this session we’ll take inspiration from other writers to start unlocking our own creativity.
SESSION 3 – Find Your Fuel – Monday 15 June 7pm- 9:30pm (GMT)
What’s the engine that drives your writing? It could be a question you don’t know the answer to, or a character’s voice in your head, or a world you want to explore. In this session, we’ll dig into what gets your brain firing and how to keep that fire burning.
SESSION 4 – Give It Some Shape – Monday 22 June 7pm- 9:30pm (GMT)
We’ll look at how some basic structure can help you take your early idea seedlings and grow them into a play.
SESSION 5 – Trust Your Instincts – Monday 29 June 7pm- 9:30pm (GMT)
We’ll use this session to respond to whatever the group might need by the end of the process
Maximum class sizes are 16.
