Theatre503’s interactive online course exploring the tools and techniques to help you generate ideas, explore time and form, create characters and write dialogue.

This course consists of five weekly sessions. Through a series of writing exercises and group discussions, you will generate ideas for dramatic stories; create active complex characters; explore space, place and time in your work; write dialogue; structure scripts; and find the right theatrical form for your play. There will be opportunities to share your developing work and receive informal peer and tutor feedback. You will also receive tips on starting and sustaining a career as a freelance scriptwriter.

James McDermott
James graduated from the University of East Anglia with an MA (Distinction) in Scriptwriting and trained on The Royal Court Writers Group, Soho Theatre’s Writers Lab and Hampstead Theatre’s Inspire: The Next Playwright Programme. James’s plays published by Samuel French include 'It Comes In Waves' (Eastern Angles/tour), ‘Jab’ (Finborough Theatre; Offie nominated for Best New Play 2024), ‘Time & Tide’ (Park Theatre/Tour; Offie nominated for Best New Play 2020) and ‘Rubber Ring’ (Pleasance Islington/Tour). James has written multiple episodes of ‘EastEnders’ and 'Doctor Who' audio drama for Big Finish Productions. James is an Arvon writer teacher, a tutor on the National Theatre’s New Views Programme and a lecturer in creative writing at the University of East Anglia.
