Paddy and Mick were born and raised in Derry and have always dreamed of something more, but when they’re torn apart as children and reunite as adults in London, they discover they’ve grown into two very different people, each with a radically different vision for their future.
Derry Boys is the debut full-length play from emerging Irish writer Niall McCarthy, born from Theatre503’s Rapid Write Response programme. This sharp comedy delves into the complexities of the Irish identity in today’s world. It’s a powerful exploration of what it takes to carve out a place in this world. McCarthy’s pilot script, ‘The Wild West’, got him selected for the Greenlight Screenwriting Lab where he will be paid to write a new pilot for Dánu Media under Philip Shelley.
Directed by Andy McLeod, this Iona Bremner production brings humour and heart. Andy, known for his award-winning short films Strange Waters and The Day of the Sun Dog, previously directed the original Rapid Write Response piece that the play came from. Driven by a passion for work that amplifies marginalized voices, Andy is dedicated to creating theatre that sparks conversation and drives cultural change.

Niall McCarthy
Niall McCarthy is an award nominated writer from Derry currently living in London. Whilst Derry Boys will be his full length debut, he has had short plays performed across the UK, with his short play ‘Die Trying’ being nominated for the Kenneth Branagh award 2024. His next play ‘Forbidden Fruit’ will be performed at the Cheltenham Playhouse in June 2025. In 2021 Niall was inducted onto the ‘Live Theatre Newcastle New Playwrights course’ and in 2023 he attended the ‘INK Festival Script Writing Course’.
