Chewing Gum Dreams is Michaela Coel’s unforgettable debut. A fierce, funny, and big hearted journey through first love, last days of school, and the moments that shape who we become.

Theatre503 celebrates this classic debut and vital part of our contemporary canon with a production that reminds us where some of our most powerful voices began.

Running time: 50 minutes (no interval)

Age guidance: 14+

Content Warnings: This play contains haze, flashing lights, depictions of and references to racism and racist language, sexual harassment and abuse, domestic violence, colourism, homophobia, fatphobia, ableism, socio-economic discrimination, and suicide. There is offensive language used in the play that is reflective of the time and circumstances of the character in the year the play was written.

tiata fahodzi is the UK’s leading British African heritage contemporary theatre company that places the stories of British African heritage and Black British diaspora communities at its core. The organisation is committed to making ambitious theatre for mid-scale stages and building confidence in British African heritage artists to be formally experimental in their work. Based in Watford tiata fahodzi produces and tours original theatrical productions, that reflect our desire to showcase the best of Black British talent, whilst supporting creative careers from early to established, and to do so with care and commitment.

 

 

RAPID WRITE RESPONSE: 

Rapid Write Response (RWR) is our short play initiative where you can meet and engage with early-career creatives, by mounting six 10-minute response pieces to Chewing Gum Dreams. Over a 3 week period the plays are written, selected, cast, rehearsed and staged. By watching a preview performance between Thursday 10 – Monday 14 September 2026, you can submit a response piece for RWR. The deadline for submissions is Tuesday 21 September 2026, 9am.

TAILORED PERFORMANCES: 

Thursday 10 and Friday 11 September 2026 7.30pm DISCOUNTED PREVIEWS FOR WRITERS: A chance for writers to enjoy a discounted ticket and meet our literary department. Those who attend previews are invited to take part in RWR. To unlock a £10 ticket, email boxoffice@theatre503.com to be digitally tagged as a writer. If you have previously been tagged as a writer, your ticket will automatically adjust to £10 on the final page of booking – you do not need a Promo Code. Saturday 19 September 2026 2:30pm PAY WHAT YOU CHOOSE RELAXED PERFORMANCE: Our Pay What You Choose where tickets start from £10. For anyone who benefits from a more relaxed performance environment. House lights are left up with audience free to exit and re-enter as required. Sound levels are reduced and any strobe or haze effects will be omitted also. We also invite those with babes in arms to attend as opportunity for parents and/or guardians to enjoy a spot of theatre, at a reduced price, without the need to hire a babysitter.

Tuesday 29 September 2026, 7:30pm CAPTIONED PERFORMANCE: This performance will be captioned using Difference Engine. The Difference Engine enables audiences to receive captions on their own mobile devices (smartphones / tablets) via a free app so that those that are Deaf and/or hard of hearing, or anyone that would like to read along, can also enjoy the performance. Our duty manager will be on hand to support anyone who may need help setting the app up. If you would like to book an access ticket for this performance, please email or call our box office to be tagged as an access patron which will allow you to book a ticket for the show.
