Advanced Playwriting with Iman Qureshi: Theatre503 Writers’ Programme

Written by Iman Qureshi
Book Now

This five week course is suitable for writers with experience of having written at least one full-length play, as well as having had some work produced (e.g. fringe show, rehearsed readings, scratch nights). You should come with a script in progress that you want to work on. Iman Qureshi will take you through workshops and exercises which look at character, structure, story and redrafting designed to develop your own work. You will be challenged to practice being rigorous and ambitious when it comes to redrafting, in order to push your ideas further. You’ll also receive feedback on your work from Iman and the other writers. Iman will tailor the course content around the needs of the participants, but as a rough guide, the following is a brief overview of the course*.

Session 1: Introduction to playwriting, developing character, and mapping change.

Session 2: Structure, structure, structure, plot and form.

Session 3: Location and building theatrical worlds

Session 4: Shopping for ingredients: Using other recipes to help you cook your own dish. (Yes, metaphor is one!)

Session 5: Putting your play ‘out there’: giving and receiving notes, pitching, taking your play from page to stage, and managing difficult emotions as writers.

*There will also be some reading and exercises for participants to complete in between sessions.

Please note we cannot commit to an ongoing dramaturgical relationship with any pieces that may develop on this course, or commit to a production. However we will offer an open and honest discussion with all participants about possible next steps for their work, recommendations of other development opportunities that might be of benefit, and guidance to where their work may best be suited in terms of future engagement.
