503 Studio Open Talks: Can We Fix The Fringe?
Fringe theatre is an unsustainable, inaccessible, under resourced and at times unhealthy model of working…but without it the industry as we know it wouldn’t exist. Where else can emerging freelance practitioners get their first opportunity of getting work on stage and taking their first steps? We’ve always known the model was broken, but 2020 has made this even more evident. But…the smaller the company, organisation or venue the quicker they can adapt and find a way of working that embraces the challenges and seeks a way of overcoming them – shorter runs, flexible rehearsals, longer lead in times, shared resources, open recruitment and many more. Is there a way of building the fringe back better to be more open, accessible, inclusive and sustainable…or is it beyond repair?
Theatre503’s Open Talks are Pay What You Can, thanks to Arts Council England’s Emergency Grant and our Share The Drama scheme.
